To me, being a Mastercard Foundation Scholar means recognizing that I have the will and the vision to sustainably develop my continent. It means having the courage to admit that yes, although it is important to fight the danger of a single story by focusing on a positive narrative, my continent has problems that are not going to be solved by good will and prayers alone. It means leaving my family, friends, familiar surroundings, and comfort zone to go abroad, not to escape daunting responsibility but to realize the important role I will play in the rise of Africa and equip myself to contribute to my continent’s development. It also means being part of a community of people who will together channel our courage to make a difference of unexpected magnitude. I am a proud Scholar.

Maty is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar at Arizona State University in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering where she is majoring in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Energy Systems and power. She is also concurrently a student at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU, with plans to graduate in May 2019. Her major choice was driven by her passion for renewable energy and her desire to combine her love for STEM fields and giving back to her community through rural electrification in Senegal. Maty interned for Cummins West Africa in Summer 2017 where she studied the total cost of ownership of a hybrid power system in a telecommunications setting in rural Senegal. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, and working out.
