Mahoro, originally from Rwanda, is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and a Senior Barrett Honors College student studying Biomedical Engineering at Arizona State University. She dreams of a career utilizing Science, innovation and entrepreneurship to improve lives of Africans. Her journey of serving people began at African Leadership Academy (ALA) where it enhanced her understanding of Africa’s needs. During this time, she practiced being the selfless change-maker she aspires to be by serving as the school Health Assistant and as the Chief Operations Officer of a student organization called EmoArt. This involvement further fueled Mahoro’s journey of earning the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, attending ASU and pursuing Biomedical Engineering, a key that Mahoro hopes to use to open doors and develop innovations that will not only change her community, but Africa as a whole.
In addition to her involvement in research, such as working on developing new techniques to culture microorganisms in life sciences laboratories; Mahoro spent the 2016 summer at the National Institute of Health working on developing and evaluating malarial drugs. Mahoro is currently working on her thesis project in a biomaterials lab where she is developing more soluble hydrogels to enhance drug delivery systems.
