Mastercard Foundation Scholars

Phase I

Since 2012, ASU has collaborated with a global network of partner organizations to select 120 academically talented Mastercard Foundation Scholars from 20 African countries. These Mastercard Foundation Scholars have demonstrated leadership potential, yet face significant barriers to continuing their education. Our undergraduate Mastercard Foundation Scholars came to ASU in four cohorts, the first of which graduated in May 2016. The final cohort was admitted in 2015 and will graduate in May 2019. They are pursuing a range of majors, with the majority concentrated in STEM fields and business. All recipients engage in leadership development and community service opportunities throughout their academic endeavors.

Phase II

The first cohort of 20 Mastercard Foundation Scholars from KNUST arrived in August 2017. These Mastercard Foundation Scholars–the first of 150 total Mastercard Foundation Scholars to receive support through the Phase II initiative–will earn master’s degrees in fields relevant to Ghana’s economic growth and social transformation. The group includes Mastercard Foundation Scholars in Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering programs in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and W.P. Carey School of Business programs in Global Logistics and Management. Prior to arriving at ASU, the Phase II Mastercard Foundation Scholars spent their summer completing intensive coursework and orientation to prepare for success in the fast-paced and rigorous program in ASU’s 3+1+1 international accelerated master’s degree program format.
