8As a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, I need to be the driving mechanism for change, self-acceptance, and embody a spirit of give back (development) on the African continent and the world at large.
Jackson Opoku is an avid scholar, currently pursuing his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at ASU. His passions include finding solutions for the most underdeveloped sectors of the African economy: education, agriculture, corporate entrepreneurship, and health. He hopes to inspire every young growing mind in his country, Ghana, to confront and address large complex challenges facing our society, in hopes of triggering ideas and finding solutions to make our country a better place to live. For the past three years, his aspiration has challenged him to help students attending schools lacking resources gain admission to some of the most endowed high schools in the country. His passion for contemporary innovative ideas in agriculture and healthcare delivery in Africa, through the application of nanotechnology and tissue regeneration approaches, fuels him on his quest for knowledge. Jackson has worked on several projects including spearheading the design of a vacuum extractor to aid childbirth and volunteering as a consulting officer during the 2019 voter ID registration in Ghana. He believes innovation alone cannot bring the transformation we yearn for on the African continent rather, organizations need to build frameworks to support these innovations through corporate entrepreneurship. Jackson has a strong conviction that no matter who you are and where you come from your dreams are valid as long as you have the will, the courage, and a good plan.
