Mukhtar Hamzat joins Arizona State University through its 3+1+1 initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation after completing three years at Ashesi University pursuing a degree in electrical and electronics engineering. As an electrical engineer, Mukhtar’s goal is to lead the drive to power Africa and unleash the best of the continent. He is passionate about social change, economic and climate sustainability with a focus at the intersection of Engineering and Entrepreneurship which he believes are complementary tools for creating sustainable positive change. Mukhtar’s passion for using technology and sustainable energy to change the lives of people has led him to volunteer with the Global Sustainability Aid project, Intern with the New York University Center for Technology and Economic Development as well as the Ghana Climate Innovation Center. In these roles, Mukhtar has worked with both local and international partners to create sustainable links between farmers and traders, enhance the adoption of sustainable power sources including solar and biogas systems and also support the growth of grassroots ventures. In 2018, Mukhtar started Redent with four of his friends to design a solution to convert “waste” from the cocoa industry into bio-fertilizers. This startup idea won his team first place at the Wege Prize Design Competition organized by the Kendall College of Arts and Design and the Wege Foundation in Michigan, US in May 2019.
